The challenge
The product page ranked at position 34 for a term with 8,100 monthly searches and unusually high commercial intent. The three pages above it had between 400 and 900 referring domains each, built up over eight to twelve years. Nothing about the on-page work was wrong — the gap was purely authority, and it was large enough that a scattergun approach would have burned a year of budget for nothing.
What we did
- 1
Ran a full gap analysis across the three incumbents and isolated the 60 referring domains that all three shared — the pattern that suggested what the term actually required.
- 2
Built a twelve-month anchor roadmap weighted heavily toward branded and partial-match early, shifting to exact-match only once the profile could carry it naturally.
- 3
Prioritised publishers in the adjacent data and operations space rather than generic marketing blogs, on the basis that topical proximity was doing more work than raw DR.
- 4
Paired each placement with an internal linking pass so authority reaching the site was routed to the target page rather than dispersing.
The outcome
The page crossed into the top ten at month five and settled at position three by month nine, where it has held for the two quarters since. Organic traffic to the wider product section grew 312%, and the client's own attribution model credited $1.2M in pipeline to the page over the following four quarters.
“We had spent two years being told this term was unwinnable. It turned out we just needed someone to work out what it actually required and then do that consistently for nine months.”
